A flat mark is not the same as a scar
After an acne lesion settles, a flat brown or grey mark can remain because inflammation stimulated pigment production. This post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation differs from an indented or raised scar, which reflects a structural change. Both can coexist, so look at texture in side light rather than assuming every dark area is permanent scarring.
Marks often fade gradually, but timing varies with the depth of inflammation, repeated picking, sun exposure and individual biology. No ethical skincare plan can promise an exact clearance date or instant whitening.
Prevent new inflammation first
A brightening serum cannot keep pace if new acne is appearing every week. Use a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser and an evidence-based acne treatment recommended for you. Avoid squeezing. Painful nodules, widespread acne or scarring should be medically assessed.
Introduce one treatment change at a time. If skin becomes red, cracked or persistently burning, pause the suspected irritant. Inflammation caused by an aggressive pigment routine can create more discolouration, particularly when the skin is also exposed to strong daylight.
Make sun and visible-light protection routine
AAD advice for dark spots includes broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. A tinted product containing iron oxide may add visible-light protection, which is relevant to some pigmentation concerns. Apply an adequate amount and reapply as directed during sustained outdoor exposure.
Hong Kong commuting can involve exposed platforms, ferries and bright pavement even on a day dominated by office work. Add shade, a hat and clothing rather than asking sunscreen to do everything. These measures support fading; they do not bleach normal skin.
Choose ingredients and suppliers conservatively
Ingredients such as azelaic acid, retinoids or vitamin C may be discussed for dark marks, but suitability depends on the complete formula, acne plan, pregnancy status and tolerance. Start slowly and obtain professional advice when prescription treatment is involved.
Avoid untraceable creams that promise rapid whitening. Regulators have warned about beauty products containing undeclared medicines or hazardous ingredients. Seek assessment for a changing, irregular or unexplained patch rather than assuming it is an acne mark.
Common questions
Will a brightening serum remove acne marks quickly?
Not predictably. Fading is gradual, and new inflammation or irritation can prolong it. Control acne, protect from light and introduce one suitable product at a time.
Is every flat dark mark a permanent scar?
No. Flat colour is often post-inflammatory pigmentation, whereas scars change texture. A clinician can assess mixed or uncertain changes.
